And for no particular reason, I couldn’t seem to get myself ready for our date just a few hours later. The outfit I’d picked out was suddenly all wrong. When I finally found a dress that worked, the shoes I wanted to wear were nowhere to be found. My bangs refused to sit right. I smudged my eyeliner. I had to change handbags at the last minute.

The doorbell rang and I hurriedly threw the last items into the new bag I’d chosen and rushed for the stairs. I have no idea why I was so flustered. Rosemarie had answered Brian’s summons and invited him in. As I looked down from the second-floor landing, the two were standing in the foyer having a nice conversation. I checked my frantic impulse to run away and calmly descended, holding tightly to the rail lest I trip and fall all the way to the bottom and ruin all the work I’d just put into my appearance.

Brian looked up and smiled warmly at me. He looked as good as ever in navy blue khakis and a light gray shirt with military details on the shoulders.

“It was nice to meet you, Brian,” Rosemarie said in her reserved way.

“You, too, Rosemarie,” he replied.

She glanced up my way as she headed back toward the kitchen and winked. “You look beautiful,” she whispered as we passed.

I reached out and pulled her into a hug. Rosemarie was always so sweetly sensitive to the needs of people around her, and in that moment, I was inordinately grateful that she was part of my Bumblebee family.

“Are you ready?” I asked Brian.

“I’ve been ready for a long time,” he said cryptically.

The look in his eyes told me that he meant every word. I was suddenly glad to be able to precede him out the door and hopefully reduce the intensity in his gaze.

He opened the door of a shiny crossover for me. When he was settled in his own seat, I looked over the dashboard full of gadgets and said, “This is a step up from that beater car you used to drive.”

Brian flashed me a grin. “That was a sweet car.”

I snorted. “It was a four-speed hatchback that didn’t have FM radio.”

“Remember that one window that wouldn’t open?” he reminisced cheerfully as he turned us back down the driveway.

“Remember it? It broke when I was trying to roll it down! I was turning the handle and the whole thing just dropped down into the door.”

“I’d forgotten that!” Brian laughed. “Well, when we finally could afford a new car, Amy suggested that we get an automatic, since the girls would one day learn to drive on it.”

“Did you get a minivan?” I teased.

But then he looked sheepish and I knew I’d guess right. I chuckled to myself.

“It was amazing,” Brian gushed. “We could get both kids into their booster seats so easily and still carry a bunch of stuff in the back. I gave it to Hannah when she went off to college and bought this car.
